Regional energy supplier shapes the energy and heating transition in South Baden

As the leading energy supplier in South Baden, badenova has also set a clear goal for the city of Freiburg: Renewable energies and climate neutrality for a city worth living in. With visionary projects and an innovative mindset, the company, in which almost 100 other municipalities in the region are involved, is driving forward the transformation of the energy system. And is attracting nationwide attention in the process - including for Freiburg as a "Green City".

badenova is pursuing the ambitious goal of being climate-neutral by 2035. This is linked to the massive expansion of energy generation through wind power and photovoltaics. With the world's second-largest photovoltaic system on a stadium roof and the first covered solar cycle path in Europe, badenova is demonstrating in Freiburg that renewable energy generation can also be realised in urban areas and that sealed infrastructure can be used twice. The entire heat generation is also being converted to renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy will contribute around half of this. With this technology, badenova is one of the pioneers in Germany. Hydrogen will be particularly important in the decarbonisation of industry. This is why badenova was a co-founder of the tri-national hydrogen initiative 3H2. In this initiative, the energy supplier is now working with over 70 partners to drive the market ramp-up of hydrogen in the tri-border region.

Energy and heating transition only in combination

Freiburg not only offers badenova a home, but also an inspiring environment for innovation and progress. The company's maxim "With the region - for the region" is also put into practice in Freiburg, as the energy and heating transition cannot be organised and implemented centrally alone. With the "Energiewende@home" ecosystem approach, badenova is placing people and private households with their individual needs at the centre of the transformation. The aim is to make the transition easy for customers - digitally, of course. In this way, badenova is creating a "marketplace" for full-service offerings in cooperation with regional tradespeople and hardware manufacturers.

With its commitment to the energy and heating transition on both a large and small scale, badenova shows that the realisation of sustainability goals is not just a vision, but a tangible reality. This was also recognised with the prestigious ZfK Sustainability AWARD in the "Digitalisation" category.

Freiburg as an innovation hotspot

In addition, badenova has been involved in promoting innovation projects in the region since it was founded more than 20 years ago. Through the badenova innovation fund for climate and water protection, 37 million euros have now been invested in climate protection projects. One example that has attracted nationwide media attention is Vino-PV on Freiburg's Tuniberg. In Vino-PV, photovoltaic systems are built over vines in order to utilise the land to generate electricity and at the same time protect the wine from the effects of climate change. The demonstration project is being scientifically monitored by an institute in Freiburg.

This makes badenova a shining example of sustainable management, innovation and integration with a wide range of partners in the "Green City" of Freiburg - as an energy supplier rooted in the region, but also far beyond the city limits.
