Circular economy in Freiburg

Freiburg im Breisgau is not only known for its impressive nature and high quality of life, but also as a pioneer in the realisation of climate and environmental protection. At a time when sustainability and resource conservation are becoming increasingly important, Freiburg is also focussing on the circular economy and bioeconomy.

Circular economy means using resources and raw materials efficiently, minimising waste and designing products in such a way that they can be reused or recycled at the end of their life cycle. In Freiburg, we promote these principles through cooperation and networking between companies, research institutions and the city administration. Together, we develop solutions that not only make economic sense, but also have a positive impact on our environment.

BioCirclE project - Urban bioeconomy strategy

In the BioCirclE project, we are developing a bioeconomy strategy for Freiburg to promote biological cycles and sustainable economic structures. Together with our partners, Fraunhofer IGB and Circular Black Forest, we are carrying out analyses to identify the region's potential. In a pilot phase, we are working with companies to implement and optimise the use of biological resources for a resource-conserving circular economy.

Circular Economy - A classification

At a time when resource scarcity and environmental pollution are becoming increasingly important, the concept of circular economy is becoming the focus of sustainable development. Our economic system currently functions according to the take-make-waste principle - it is linear. Valuable resources are lost. The circular economy aims to extend the life cycle of products and materials, minimise waste and make efficient use of biological and technical resources. This is not only a sustainability issue, but also an economic necessity in order to secure the competitiveness of companies and open up new areas of business.

The circular economy and bioeconomy offer considerable potential for Freiburg as a business location. Freiburg is already a pioneer in the areas of sustainability and environmental technologies. With over 2,000 companies active in the field of green tech and a growing number of start-ups developing innovative solutions in the circular economy, the city is positioning itself as a centre for sustainable business models.
