BioCirclE - Urban bioeconomy

In the BioCirclE project, we want to encourage companies in the Freiburg region to operate in a circular way and to engage with the circular economy and bioeconomy. The Fraunhofer IGB research institute is investigating how the bioeconomy can be utilised in Freiburg and is creating the basis for an urban bioeconomy strategy. Together with our implementation partner Circular Black Forest, we are analysing key players in the region and finding ways to promote circular economy.

We then implement various measures of the bioeconomy strategy together with companies and work closely with them to successfully implement circular economy principles.

In addition to Fraunhofer IGB and Circular Black Forest, the project and implementation partners include the sustainability management of the City of Freiburg, the "Green Industry Park Freiburg" initiative, Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung Freiburg GmbH and IHK Südlicher Oberrhein.

Objectives of the BioCirclE project

The aim of the project is to develop a bioeconomy strategy for Freiburg as a business location in order to establish biological cycles and sustainable economic structures in the long term.

In addition, the following sub-goals are being pursued within the project :

  • Promotion of the circular economy through the reduction of fossil raw materials
  • Promoting resource efficiency by establishing urban material cycle models
  • Promoting innovation and economic resilience

The BioCirclE project was financed from state funds approved by the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.

Participation in workshops

Together, we want to put the circular economy and bioeconomy into practice. Measures from the bioeconomy strategy will be implemented in a pilot phase as part of a SolutionCirclE, so that theory can find its way into practice. Let's work together on a sustainable and circular economy in the Freiburg region.

"BioCirclE is more than just a project - it is an invitation to work together with stakeholders to shape a sustainable future in which waste is a thing of the past and innovative solutions for a resource-efficient economy are created."

Anna Reiners
Co-founder and managing director of Circular Black Forest

"For a circular food economy, it is crucial to go beyond resource conservation and integrate regional value creation, security of supply and justice in the sense of comprehensive sustainability. Initiatives by small and medium-sized companies in the food industry in the Freiburg region are already showing how this can be realised."

Prof. Dr. Arnim Wiek
Head, Humboldt Professorship for Sustainable Food Economics, Institute of Economics, University of Freiburg

"A functioning circular food economy requires the participation of many small and medium-sized enterprises, which requires suitable support formats from local politics and business development. Here, the Freiburg region can learn from good examples in various cities and municipalities in Germany and Europe."

Dr. David Sipple
Research Group Manager, Humboldt Professorship for Sustainable Food Economics, Institute of Economics, University of Freiburg
