Green City Freiburg - where sustainability is at home
Freiburg took environmental and climate protection seriously back in the mid-1970s - earlier than most cities and municipalities in Germany. Freiburg is considered one of the birthplaces of the German environmental protection movement. Today, Green City Freiburg is known far beyond the borders of Europe as a model city for climate protection. For example, Freiburg is home to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, the largest European institute for solar research. Research into hydrogen and other renewable energies is carried out in a wide range of companies and institutes. Last but not least, people have been living "green" in Freiburg for many years, in climate-friendly, partly car-free model districts such as Vauban, Solarsiedlung or Gutleutmatten.
From Freiburg to the world - this is what the world's leading trade fair Intersolar achieved. It was established and then flourished in Freiburg, then moved to Messe München due to expansive growth. As part of The smarter E Europe, it is still co-organized from Freiburg today. Green Industry Park
Together with local companies, Freiburg's North Industrial Estate and the Hochdorf Industrial Estate are gradually being transformed into sustainable, energy- and resource-efficient industrial and commercial areas with a nationwide model character. Based on jointly developed climate protection sub-concepts, various measures have been developed for the areas of energy efficiency, energy management, renewable energies and mobility, some of which have already been implemented. Committed companies have become drivers, public relations work and regular workshops - including company visits to innovative neighboring companies - multiply ideas and establish contacts. For example, the Europa-Park stadium of SC Freiburg, the Freiburg exhibition halls and other buildings are supplied with waste heat from Cerdia Produktions GmbH via a local heating network.
Sustainability performance center
The Sustainability Center Freiburg (LZN) is a unique cooperation between the University of Freiburg and the five Freiburg Fraunhofer Institutes EMI, IAF, IPM, ISE and IWM. The LZN also cooperates closely with the Cluster of Excellence "Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems" (livMatS). Together with partners from industry, the High-Performance Center researches and develops innovative technologies and solutions for a sustainable future.
Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems
The Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems (INATECH) researches and develops engineering solutions that are geared towards the current challenges of sustainability. Sustainable materials, energy systems and resilience are the focus of the program. In interdisciplinary research projects, methods, models, materials, technologies, demonstrators and technical systems are developed that meet the sustainable requirements of present and future generations.
Öko-Institut
The Öko-Institut e.V. is one of Europe's leading independent research and consultancy organizations with over 190 employees in Freiburg, Darmstadt and Berlin. Based on value-oriented scientific research, the Öko-Institut advises decision-makers from politics, business and civil society on issues such as sustainability, energy, climate protection, pollution control and radiation protection, agriculture, mobility, resource management, nuclear technology and plant safety as well as law, politics and governance.

Green City Cluster
The "Green City Cluster", a Freiburg-based business network for the environmental and solar industry, has been in existence since 2008 and now comprises over 150 local and regional member companies. In the past, the activities of the Green City Cluster have contributed to the positioning of cluster members in the markets for renewable and solar energies, energy efficiency, sustainable planning and construction and environmental technologies.
Climate Partner Upper Rhine
Working together for climate protection, bringing together the relevant stakeholders from the region and generating benefits for science, business and local authorities - this is the aim of the association Strategische Partner - Klimaschutz am Oberrhein e.V. It is the largest climate protection network in the region and manages a range of projects that promote climate protection efforts in the region between Offenburg and Waldshut in a variety of ways.
IHK Southern Upper Rhine
The IHK is the first point of contact for companies in many areas. The IHK Südlicher Oberrhein organises three networks for interested persons from IHK member companies in the field of ecological sustainability: Operational environmental protection, energy, energy efficiency and renewables, and resource and material efficiency. Hydrogen technology
In addition to solar, wind and biogas, hydrogen can also be a clean, sustainable source of energy. Stadtreinigung Freiburg (ASF) already operates several hydrogen vehicles. hydrogen vehicles. The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is also working on green hydrogen with the prospect of establishing its own Fraunhofer Hydrogen Center in the future.
Solar technology and research

Greenhouse for green innovations
Grünhof sees itself as an incubator and home for the start-up, sustainability and creative scene in the Freiburg region. The initiative offers co-working spaces at three locations and provides support with contacts and advice. At Grünhof in Belfortstraße, in the spectacular Lokhalle creative park and at Augustinerplatz, start-ups and young companies work and network for a green and liveable future.
