Crossing borders: Biotechnology
Without medical biotechnology, modern drug research and development would be inconceivable today. Freiburg has been part of the tri-national life sciences cluster 'BioValley' for around 25 years. The cross-border network on the Upper Rhine between Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel is a breeding ground for biotechnological innovations along the entire value chain.
The pharmaceutical industry in the region focuses on cooperation with small and medium-sized biotechnology companies, which act as suppliers and strategic partners to global players such as Sartorius CellGenix, Aldevron and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Plant biotechnology, for example, can make an important contribution to nutrition, energy production and the manufacture of bio-based products.
