Freiburg - hotspot for microsystems technology

Baden-Württemberg - and Freiburg in particular - occupies a leading position within Germany in the research and development of microsystems technology and nanotechnologies. These two cross-sectional technologies have a key function for many products of the 21st century - in the most diverse areas and wherever intelligent, space-saving and energy-efficient solutions are sought, such as health, the environment, electronics, construction and mobility.

Shaping the future is a Black Forest tradition

The people of the Black Forest can look back on a long tradition of inventiveness and technical innovation. Numerous innovation and world market leaders were and are at home here, from cuckoo clocks to precision mechanics and microsystems technology. This is no wonder, as the mentality of the people in Freiburg and the region is tailor-made for progress: reliable and precise in their work, open-minded and interested.

Research and practice are closely interlinked here

Microsystems technology is one of the key drivers of growth and employment between the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine. Companies in Freiburg and the surrounding area benefit from a unique infrastructure: the Institute for Microsystems Technology (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg, together with Furtwangen University and the Hahn-Schickard Institute for Microanalysis Systems, form one of the most innovative hotspots in the field of microtechnologies in the southwest.

Freiburg offers everything that promotes excellence in microsystems technology:

  • central location in the border triangle region of Germany, France and Switzerland
  • excellent training and further education facilities
  • excellent employers such as Endress+Hauser, LITEF, Sick, TDK-Micronas and many more
  • International networks and top clusters in research and science
  • a creative environment with world market leaders and young companies
  • an active network of companies, research institutions and service providers to support and promote cross-industry collaboration
