StickyStoneStudio

From Freiburg start-up to global gaming phenomenon

How passion, creativity and locational advantages are writing a new chapter in the games industry. A remarkable company that is shaking up the games development scene is based in the centre of Freiburg: StickyStoneStudio - a start-up that was born with a dream of establishing Freiburg im Breisgau as a gaming hotspot. Founder Philipp Degasper turned this dream into reality when he designed his first video game "Memorrha" at the Technical University in Offenburg. A 3D puzzle adventure that takes players to an abandoned civilisation to solve puzzles and discover secrets. In the meantime, the young, energetic team of game developers has made a name for itself on the international market and confirmed that outstanding achievements are often the product of passion, creativity and a favourable location.

Team StickyStoneStudio

StickyStoneStudio combines modern technologies and creative game design to develop impressive games and applications. The team also offers additional services for app development and 3D visualisation with Unity.

Things really got going in the Lokhalle at the old goods station in Freiburg - a co-working space where many young companies come together. The space soon became too cramped and the company relocated, first to the Stühlinger district and then to the Gundelfingen industrial estate. It was 2019 when the studio presented itself to the public at Cologne Gamescom, the world's largest trade fair for video games, and has been represented there every year since then with its own stand and game.

With the wind of success...

...in the sails, the team began work on a new project in 2020, "M.O.O.D.S.", an action-packed multiplayer game. StickyStoneStudio received a grant of €94,000 from Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg for the prototype funding of the game . A lot has happened in development since then and the feedback from Gamescom is improving year on year. The studio is currently aiming for a pre-release on Steam in 2024.

But StickyStoneStudio is more than just an indie (independent) game developer; the twelve-strong team puts a lot of expertise into other projects, such as immersive augmented and virtual reality applications for the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, agencies and industrial clients.

For example, they have developed an app that allows users to take a look inside a heat pump and visualise how it works. There are also collaborations with other sectors such as the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. As well as exchanges with local educational institutions

Developers are still exotic in Freiburg. Nevertheless, the potential that Freiburg has as a city for innovative companies is evident. In 2023 alone , StickyStoneStudio received 258 applications, which underlines the interest in working in the gaming industry.

StickyStoneStudio Zitat

"Of course, Freiburg is not only a city worth living in for us, but also thrives on the exchange with the border triangle. As we distribute our games internationally, it is extremely important for us to get out of our bubble."
