Knowledge grows when you share it

In order for innovation processes to succeed, the promotion of knowledge and technology transfer between companies, universities and research institutions in Freiburg is particularly important. The result: growth and career prospects for the benefit of the entire region.

The Central Office for Technology Transfer at the University of Freiburg acts as an interface between university science and research on the one hand and industry on the other. It is the point of contact for companies and institutions that require assistance and are looking for cooperation projects. The research institutes of the Fraunhofer and Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft are important contacts for partners from industry and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Innovation quarter - a reflection of Freiburg's dynamism

The foundation of the Faculty of Engineering was also the starting signal for an unprecedented urban development and the basis for further major investments - including the establishment of Messe Freiburg, the construction of light rail line 4, the white building ensemble of FWTM (Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GnbH & Co. KG) and the new stadium of SC Freiburg.

Short distances

The innovation quarter is conveniently designed for optimal interaction. Whether from the campus of the Faculty of Engineering to the Freiburg Innovation Center (FRIZ), which opens in 2022, or to the neighbouring University Hospital, the Fraunhofer, Max Planck and Hahn-Schickard Institutes, BioTechPark or Lokhalle creative park - you can get from one to the other in 10-15 minutes. This spatial concentration of important key players and innovation drivers has a major pull effect. Freiburg draws many young, research-intensive and technology-oriented companies with a focus on microsystems, AI, robotics and other players in the fields of environment, health or key technologies.

Institut

Non-university research and innovation

The city of science Freiburg is home to numerous non-university research institutes, including five Fraunhofer Institutes, two Max Planck Institutes, a Hahn-Schickard Institute and an institute of the Leibniz Association. They are constantly creating new knowledge, exchanging ideas with each other and thus providing impetus for the economy and society. With around 2,500 employees and a total of five institutes, the Fraunhofer site in Freiburg is one of the largest of the 40 or so Fraunhofer sites in Germany. As the home of the Hahn-Schickard Institute for Microanalysis Systems, the city is also a hub of the "Baden-Württemberg Innovation Alliance", a unique nationwide network of application-oriented research institutions with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises.

Fraunhofer is the world's leading organization for application-oriented research and a leader in inventions and newly registered patents. The five Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg develop technologies for numerous applications in the fields of energy, security, communication, environment, health, production and mobility. With around 2,500 employees, Freiburg is one of the largest Fraunhofer locations in Germany.

Max Planck strives for world-class research. It serves as the hub for many innovative products and services that are implemented as part of licenses or company spin-offs. In Freiburg, two institutes with a total of more than 400 employees conduct research. Much focus is placed not only on two key areas of modern biology - immunology and epigenetics, but also in the areas of crime, security and law.

The "MAXLab", the world's first independent laboratory for criminologists to use virtual reality technology in studies and experiments, will open in 2022 and is a particularly innovative achievement. This makes it possible to conduct VR-based and other social and behavioral science studies to research human behavior.

Hahn-Schickard centers on industry-oriented, application-oriented research, development and production in microsystems technology. With around 100 employees , Hahn-Schickard also researches, develops and manufactures innovative solutions for microsystems technology at its Freiburg site in close cooperation with industry - from the initial idea through to production. As the headquarters of the Hahn-Schickard Institute for Microanalysis Systems, the city of Freiburg is a hub of the "Baden-Württemberg Innovation Alliance" - a unique nationwide network of application-oriented research institutions with a special focus on small and medium-sized companies.
