From Egypt to Freiburg: Research, family and settling in

A new chapter in life, bridging science and nature

Freiburg attracts international professionals who are breaking new ground here – both professionally and personally. One of them is Rehab Amin, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics.

In this interview, she talks about her journey to Freiburg, the challenges of starting afresh with children, and the vital role played by a supportive environment. It becomes clear how Freiburg, with its unique blend of science, nature and community, can become a place where you don’t just work, but truly feel at home.

First of all, we’re interested in knowing which three words spring to mind when this Egyptian-born woman thinks of Freiburg.

Rehab Amin: Nature, peaceful, safe.

Nature: I appreciate being close to the Black Forest and the many opportunities for outdoor activities.
Peaceful: Freiburg, with its peaceful atmosphere, suits me well.
Safe: As a Muslim woman from the Middle East, I also find the city to be tolerant and safe.

How did you end up in Freiburg?

Rehab Amin: I worked as a professor in Egypt for over ten years and gained international research experience, including in the USA and Germany. In 2021, I moved to California to join the California Institute of Technology. When my professor accepted a post as director at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics, I took up the offer to move to Freiburg. Despite it being a fresh start, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

What was it like when you first arrived in Freiburg, and do you have any tips for newcomers?

Rehab Amin: Moving here with my two sons was a challenge. My eldest son studied illustration in Berlin, whilst my youngest learnt German within a year and passed his Abitur.

My advice: find out about the German education system early on, and stay patient and positive.

Were there any offers or people who were particularly helpful to you?

Rehab Amin: I received a great deal of help from the Max Planck Society, particularly from the International Office, as well as from a helpful neighbour who gave us a warm welcome.

When did you feel that you’d ‘made it’?

Rehab Amin: 2025 was a special year: my eldest son finished his degree, and my youngest son passed his A-levels and started studying engineering. It felt like we’d really made it.

What do you particularly like about Freiburg, and what do you miss?

Rehab Amin: I work in a supportive environment and live in a town that values nature and community. I miss my family back home, but we stay in close contact.

What has been your best moment in Freiburg so far?

Rehab Amin: One of my favourite moments in Freiburg was the cable car ride up the Schauinsland, which offers a unique experience whatever the season. In summer, you can enjoy the greenery and flowers that cover the mountain, providing a breathtaking backdrop to the city below. In winter, on the other hand, the mountain is covered in snow, and the view of Freiburg is even more breathtaking than in summer.

Have you come to stay?

Rehab Amin: I’d love to. Job security and a sense of belonging have made Freiburg my new home.
