A Freiburg start-up conquers the orbit

Thermal intelligence. Sounds like science fiction, but it's reality. A reality created by Max Gulde, Marius Bierdel and Christian Mittermaier. The three former employees of the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI) in Freiburg founded constellr in 2020 and used satellite technology to offer the world a radically new view of itself.

The constellr satellites, which will populate orbit from 2024, are not just metal objects orbiting the earth. They are eyes in the sky that offer an unprecedented perspective. The main focus of constellr is on measuring the Earth's surface temperature - and the applications are as diverse as they are fascinating: from the early detection of forest fires and the predictionof floods and droughts to the identification of heat islands in our cities.

Constellr notices changing conditions

In agriculture, constellr's technology could also represent a real breakthrough. The ability to measure the water content of crops from space could increase the efficiency of irrigation systems, save water and increase crop yields. A win-win situation for everyone - farmers, consumers and our planet.

Constellr not only shares with its home city of Freiburg the fundamental values of protecting the earth and promoting sustainable solutions, but also appreciates and utilises the synergies that are possible in this location: The close connection to science ensures constellr a steady influx of highly qualified talent and provides access to cutting-edge research and technology.

In 2023, constellr was awarded a multi-million euro contract by the European Commission and the European Space Agency ESA. As part of this agreement, constellr will join the Earth observation programme 'Copernicus' and will provide high-resolution infrared thermal images from space in the future. The constellr data will thus be accessible to thousands of institutional customers in Europe via Copernicus.
At constellr, everything points to a green and gold future!

"If we'd had the choice, we might have started somewhere else. But Freiburg is fantastic for the work-life balance.
