WEtell

Climate protection, fairness, data protection

Mobile communications can be this green. The desire for something new, something better, something green was born out of unease about the status quo - and it made waves. Quite literally, because Andreas Schmucker, one of the later managing directors of WEtell, realised that the mobile communications market was firmly in the grip of old patterns and outdated approaches.

The vision was born to contribute to sustainable change in our society from a business perspective. Instead of just looking on, he decided, together with Alma Spribille and Nico Tucher, to take matters into his own hands. They dreamed of a mobile phone provider that offered more than just calls and surfing - they wanted to put climate protection, data protection, fairness and transparency centre stage. In July 2019, they turned their dream into reality: WEtell was founded. With a clear focus and a good dose of courage, they plunged into the huge world of mobile telephony. They set out to show the giants of the industry that people wanted more.

One year after its foundation, the time had come

WEtell was on the market and got off to a brilliant start in the mobile phone industry. However, they not only kept their promise to their customers, but also went one step further. Just three months after the market launch, they began setting up solar installations in Germany together with the green search engine Ecosia. The first plants were built in Aue, Saxony. With a capacity of 570kWp, these systems produce enough electricity to supply around 190 four-person households. Because digital and remote communication consume a lot of electricity and therefore produce a lot of CO2, WEtell is counteracting this by tackling the root of the problem and not only offsettingCO2, but also making sure that it is not produced in the first place. However, whereCO2 is unavoidably produced, they recover the emissions through biochar projects.

Another key aspect of WEtell's corporate model is that it is a so-called responsibly owned company . This means that it has a special ownership structure that ensures that the financial interests of owners, investors or speculators do not jeopardise the long-term goals and values of the company. In this model, the company practically belongs to itself and decisions may only be made by the people who actually work in the company. Surpluses flow back into the company and not into private profit maximisation. For WEtell, the so-called "Economy for the Common Good" (GWÖ), an economic system geared towards well-being and sustainability, is of course also extremely exciting at this point: "Since the company was founded, it was clear to us that we wanted to be a values-based company. As a sustainable mobile phone provider, we focus on climate protection, data protection, fairness and transparency. For us, becoming part of the Economy for the Common Good means being able to anchor these values even more firmly and make them more transparent," - says Nico Tucher, one of the founders.

"People often refer to our success story. They always say: 'From Freiburg, of course. Where else would it come from?"

A responsibly owned company from Freiburg

The progressive and environmentally conscious atmosphere in Freiburg made the city the ideal location for WEtell. The strong start-up culture, the numerous co-working spaces, the regular events for founders and the proximity to nature provided the ideal environment for the company's vision to flourish. WEtell's headquarters are therefore still located in a converted 55m² shipping container in the Lokhalle creative park at Grünhof.

WEtell is an important example of how companies can be run today - with respect for the environment, fairness towards customers and a strong focus on the values that characterise the company. They are proud to be different and have proven that mobile communications can also be sustainable, true to the motto: "Making green instead of washing green".
