Dermagnostix
Pioneering work for dermatology in Freiburg
The story of Dermagnostix begins with the Munich doctor Natalie Garzorz-Stark. Her goal: to fundamentally change the diagnosis of some skin diseases. She recognised the inadequacies of traditional diagnostics under the microscope and sought a solution that was faster, more precise and more efficient. She found this solution in Freiburg, more precisely at the Hahn-Schickard Institute, an incubator for innovative start-ups. Together with Katharina Dormanns, then head of the institute's Labdisk platform, Natalie founded Dermagnostix. They worked on the development of a specially configured mini-laboratory that can perform complex analyses of skin samples in just a fraction of the time required by conventional laboratory procedures.
Dermagnostix has set itself the task of using this technology to enable doctors to understand their patients at a molecular level and thus prescribe an even more appropriate therapy . This is particularly important because in dermatology, several forms of therapy often have to be tried for months before an effective one is found. With the Dermagnostix solution, doctors can make informed decisions based on the patient's individual molecular signature.
Optimal start-up ecosystem and renowned institute: Freiburg creates synergies
Freiburg has proven to be the ideal location for Dermagnostix. Firstly, because the city is known for its dynamic technology and start-up ecosystem and offers access to highly qualified talent, important networks and innovative research. Secondly, because Dermagnostix has the opportunity here to work closely with the Hahn-Schickard Institute and benefit from its extensive resources.
But Dermagnostix doesn't just want to challenge the status quo, the company also has big plans for the future. Founder Natalie Garzorz-Stark expects the tests developed by Dermagnostix to be authorised by statutory health insurance companies in a few years' time. This would be a significant milestone and would open up access to these innovative diagnostics to a much larger group of patients.
